English Grammar Stage 1

This course is the next stage after the foundation stage.  It is designed to:

• introduce the rudiments of grammar,
• teach spelling systematically,
• improve the children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills,
• reinforce the skills taught in the foundation stage program and
• extend the children’s phonic knowledge.

This course has been designed where each part of speech is introduced with an accompanying action and colour.  The actions not only enliven the teaching, but also make the parts of speech easier for the children to remember.  

This course is designed to develop the children’s writing skills.  Gradually, the children become aware that they are writing for a purpose:  that their words are intended to be read and understood.  They learn that their writing is easier to understand if it is grammatically correct, accurately spelt, well punctuated and neatly written.  The children also learn that, if they use interesting words, their writing can give real pleasure.  Even at this early stage, it is valuable for children to have a simple understanding of this long-term goal.
